ANCC
FNP-BC — Family Nurse Practitioner (ANCC)
The ANCC family nurse practitioner examination assesses care across the lifespan, from newborns to older adults, with a strong emphasis on assessment, diagnosis and clinical management in primary care.
Who is eligible
- · Active, current RN licence in a U.S. state or territory (or the professional equivalent in another country).
- · A master's, postgraduate certificate or doctoral degree from an accredited family NP programme.
- · A minimum of 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours in the family/individual across the lifespan role.
- · Graduate-level courses in advanced physiology and pathophysiology, advanced health assessment and advanced pharmacology.
- · Graduate content in health promotion, differential diagnosis and disease management.
How to apply, step by step
- · Create an account with the certification body and complete the online application for your population focus.
- · Upload official transcripts showing your graduate NP program, population focus and required advanced coursework.
- · Request your program director validation form if your transcript has not yet been posted.
- · Pay the examination fee; membership in a professional association usually reduces it.
- · Wait for the authorization to test notice, then schedule at a testing centre or for live remote proctoring.
- · Test within the 90-day authorization window — extensions are limited and usually carry a fee.
What the examination looks like
- · 175 items, 150 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions.
- · Three and a half hours of testing time.
- · Computer-based, multiple choice with some multiple-response and drag-and-drop items.
- · Pass/fail scaled scoring — the raw percentage you see in practice is not the reported score.
Content weighting
Assessment and diagnosis~36%
Clinical management~35%
Professional role and policy~15%
Health promotion and disease prevention~14%
Exam day
- · Arrive at least 30 minutes early with a valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches your application exactly.
- · Nothing personal goes into the testing room — phone, watch, notes and bags are stored in a locker.
- · Use the tutorial minutes to settle your breathing and set your pacing target (about one minute per question).
- · Flag and move on. Two minutes stuck on one item costs you three easy items later.
- · Read the last line of the stem first, then the stem, then the options; answer what is actually asked.
- · Choose the safest, least invasive, guideline-consistent action unless the stem gives you a reason not to.
- · Unscored pretest items are mixed in — a strange question is not a signal that you are failing.
Keeping the credential
- · Certification is valid for five years.
- · Renewal requires 75 continuing education hours, of which at least 25 must be in pharmacotherapeutics.
- · You also complete professional development in one or more additional renewal categories.
- · Keep your RN licence active for the whole certification period.
