ANCC

AGACNP-BC — Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP (ANCC)

The acute care examination focuses on physiologically unstable and technologically dependent patients — critical care, hospital medicine, procedures and rapid decision-making.

Who is eligible

  • · Active, current RN licence.
  • · Graduate degree or postgraduate certificate from an accredited adult-gerontology acute care NP programme.
  • · At least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours in the acute care role.
  • · The three separate graduate advanced practice courses.
  • · Documented content in acute, critical and complex chronic care of adults and older adults.

How to apply, step by step

  • · Create an account with the certification body and complete the online application for your population focus.
  • · Upload official transcripts showing your graduate NP program, population focus and required advanced coursework.
  • · Request your program director validation form if your transcript has not yet been posted.
  • · Pay the examination fee; membership in a professional association usually reduces it.
  • · Wait for the authorization to test notice, then schedule at a testing centre or for live remote proctoring.
  • · Test within the 90-day authorization window — extensions are limited and usually carry a fee.

What the examination looks like

  • · 175 items, 150 scored, three and a half hours.
  • · Case-based items emphasising haemodynamics, ventilation, procedures and diagnostics.
  • · Pass/fail scaled scoring.

Content weighting

Assessment and diagnosis~35%
Clinical management including procedures~38%
Professional role and systems~15%
Health promotion and risk reduction~12%

Exam day

  • · Arrive at least 30 minutes early with a valid, unexpired government photo ID whose name matches your application exactly.
  • · Nothing personal goes into the testing room — phone, watch, notes and bags are stored in a locker.
  • · Use the tutorial minutes to settle your breathing and set your pacing target (about one minute per question).
  • · Flag and move on. Two minutes stuck on one item costs you three easy items later.
  • · Read the last line of the stem first, then the stem, then the options; answer what is actually asked.
  • · Choose the safest, least invasive, guideline-consistent action unless the stem gives you a reason not to.
  • · Unscored pretest items are mixed in — a strange question is not a signal that you are failing.

Keeping the credential

  • · Five-year certification period.
  • · 75 continuing education hours including 25 in pharmacotherapeutics.
  • · Many acute care roles also require current ACLS and, in some settings, procedural competency logs.
